Fittingly, one of his first jobs was as a photographer for the magazine Look, which he got when he sold them a photograph of a newsstand vendor forlornly selling papers announcing the death of FDR. His father not only had a darkroom in their house and encouraged him to utilize it, but he also ended up being his high school's photographer.
